Terms of Use

These terms govern your use of SF Stairway Spotter. By using the app, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Eligibility and accounts
You must be at least 13 to create an account. You are responsible for your account credentials and for activity performed through your account. You may browse the map without creating an account.
Outdoor activity and assumption of risk
Walking, running, climbing stairs, crossing streets, and other outdoor activities involve inherent risks, including falls, uneven or damaged surfaces, traffic, construction, weather, poor lighting, physical exertion, crime, animals, and changing access conditions. By choosing to visit a stairway or follow information provided through the app, you voluntarily assume the risks inherent in those activities.
You are responsible for evaluating current conditions, obeying signs and applicable laws, staying aware of traffic and your surroundings, and deciding whether an activity is appropriate for your health, experience, and abilities. Stop in a safe place before using the app. Do not interact with it while walking, climbing stairs, driving, cycling, or crossing a street. Children must be supervised by a responsible adult.
Map and stairway information
Stairway locations, descriptions, ratings, step counts, photos, routes, and availability may be incomplete or inaccurate. The app does not guarantee that a stairway is public, open, safe, accessible, or suitable for any particular person or purpose. A stairway’s appearance in the app is not an instruction or recommendation to enter it. Follow closures, barriers, posted restrictions, private-property boundaries, and instructions from public authorities.
SF Stairway Spotter is not an emergency, safety, accessibility, medical, or professional navigation service and does not monitor current street or stairway conditions. In an emergency, stop using the app and contact the appropriate emergency services.
Your content and conduct
You may submit feedback, corrections, stairway suggestions, and optional supporting photos. You promise that your submissions are lawful, accurate to the best of your knowledge, and do not violate another person’s privacy, copyright, or other rights. You grant us permission to review and use your submissions to respond to the report, operate the app, and improve the public directory. Do not submit photos of people without their permission. Do not misuse the app, interfere with its operation, submit harmful content, impersonate others, or attempt unauthorized access.
Third-party services
The app depends on services such as Google Maps, Supabase, Apple, Google, and Vercel. Their services may be unavailable or governed by separate terms. We are not responsible for third-party services or external links.
Purchases and premium features
If paid features are offered, purchases are processed by the applicable app store and are also subject to its terms, payment rules, refund rules, and account requirements. Product descriptions shown at purchase control what a purchase unlocks. We may improve, replace, or discontinue individual features while continuing to provide the purchased level of access as required by applicable law and app-store rules.
Our content and license
The app, its design, software, text, graphics, branding, curated content, and compilation of information are owned by or licensed to Alexandra Kenin and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws. We give you a limited, personal, nonexclusive, nontransferable, revocable license to use the app for its intended, noncommercial purpose. You may not copy, scrape, sell, reverse engineer, or commercially exploit the app or its content except where applicable law expressly permits it.
Availability and accounts
We may change, suspend, or discontinue features and may restrict accounts that violate these terms or threaten the service or other users. You may delete your account at any time from Settings.
Leaderboards and mayorships
Mayorships are optional, recreational rankings based on qualifying verified visits during a rolling 30-day period. Only one visit per stairway per San Francisco calendar day counts. Standings can change as visits are added or leave the active window, and an existing mayor keeps the title when eligible totals are tied. We may remove fraudulent or abusive activity and correct inaccurate standings.
Disclaimer and limitation of liability
The app is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties to the fullest extent permitted by law, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, noninfringement, and uninterrupted availability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Alexandra Kenin is not liable for losses, injuries, or property damage resulting from inherent outdoor risks; public or private property conditions; traffic; closures; third-party conduct or services; inaccurate or outdated information; or choices made while using the app. Nor will Alexandra Kenin be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages arising from the app. Nothing in these terms excludes liability, remedies, warranties, or consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for gross negligence, willful misconduct, or fraud where such a limitation is prohibited.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the app changes. We will revise the effective date and provide additional notice when required by law. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it.
